High Visibility Railway Workwear

High visibility clothing was first introduced on the railway in 1965 and is now an integral and necessary feature of the industry. The number of deaths and injuries on the rail network in the UK has reduced considerably since the early 1970s when the wearing of railway high visibility clothing became accepted as an essential safety feature for railway personnel. It is now a requirement that all personnel working on or around the track wear high vis railway clothing.

At its inception, high visibility clothing was very low-tech, often just a simple tabard. Today, features have advanced considerably, and continuous improvements have increased the effectiveness of the high vis garments to such an extent that they now contribute, in no small way, to improved overall safety for rail workers. The range of garments now available includes such items as railway high viz jackets, railway high viz trousers, railway high viz t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Often, railway personnel have to work in very close proximity to busy tracks and it is therefore crucial that they are highly visible, both day and night and in all weather conditions. There is a particular specification for clothing that is allowed to be worn on the UK rail network. That Railway Group Standard is known as GO/RT 3279 and is based on European Standard EN471.
